Volkswagen is initiating a recall of approximately 98,806 ID.4 electric SUVs in the United States due to a defect in the door handles that could lead to unexpected door openings while driving. This recall affects vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2024, which may have door handles that do not comply with factory specifications for water ingress protection. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that water could enter the printed circuit board through the door handles, resulting in malfunctions that may cause the locks to open unexpectedly. Although it is estimated that only about 1% of the affected vehicles have this defect, Volkswagen has received 135 complaints related to the issue from June 2023 to May 2024, with no reported injuries or accidents. Volkswagen plans to notify affected customers by mail no later than November 1, 2024, and dealers will inspect and replace the door handles as necessary, along with providing a software update, all at no cost to the vehicle owners.
